Maritime and Aviation Internship Scheme - Visits to the Government Dockyard and Boat Tour 2022
July - August 2022
The “Maritime and Aviation Training Fund” (MATF) was established in 2014, in which various training schemes and scholarships aim to build up a vibrant, diversified and competitive pool of professionals and technical personnel to support Hong Kong’s future development in the maritime and aviation sectors. As of today, more than 14 500 students and local maritime and aviation practitioners are benefited from the MATF.
In 2022, 55 maritime-related companies participated in the Maritime and Aviation Internship Scheme (MAIS) (Maritime) under the MATF, offering in total 340 internship places for non-final year full-time local students from any undergraduate or sub-degree programmes. Apart from obtaining practical work experience in the maritime sector, students were also given chances to take part in various activities arranged by the Scheme. Around 90 students joined the site visits to the Government Dockyard located on the Stonecutters Island on 29 July and 12 August 2022, and Boat Tour on 19 August 2022. Through these activities, students could explore more about the operations of the Government Dockyard, as well as the maritime and port facilities of Hong Kong.
The MAIS Boat Tour 2022 was held on a ferry “World Star”, which was refitted from a local traditional passenger ferry. The honorable guest, Mr. LAM Sai-hung, GBS, JP, Secretary for Transport and Logistics, delivered a welcome speech for this tour and showed his heartfelt support to the industry and students. The ferry toured around various maritime and port facilities in Hong Kong such as the Kwai Chung Control Station, Kwai Tsing Container Terminals, Rambler Channel Typhoon Shelter and Public Cargo Working Area, and Green Island Lighthouse. In addition, the representatives from the local vessel trade, the Marine Department and a current student of the Maritime Services Training Institute (MSTI) were invited to join the tour and share their experiences and insights about the latest development and opportunities of the maritime sector of Hong Kong with the participating students. Not only can they learn more about the local port facilities on a traditional sea transport, but also obtain the in-depth knowledge and the opportunities of the industry and the local vessel trade.
Through the MAIS, the young generation could gain precious relevant work experience, explore the latest development of the maritime industry, and enhance their exposure to the wide spectrum of career opportunities, allowing them to become the future professionals of the Hong Kong maritime sector.
