Maritime and Aviation Internship Scheme - Boat Tour cum Sharing Session 2024, Visits to the Government Dockyard and the Pacific Basin Shipping Limited
July 2024

Established in 2014, the Maritime and Aviation Training Fund has all along been receiving strong support from different maritime-related companies throughout the past 10 years. The Maritime and Aviation Internship Scheme (MAIS) is particularly welcomed by the companies. In addition to providing internship opportunities at maritime-related companies, the MAIS is dedicated to offering comprehensive training and development support, including industry visits, workshops and sharing sessions, and pre-employment training. A sea journey with exchange sessions and visits to the Government Dockyard and Pacific Basin Shipping Limited were organised in July this year. These activities helped deepen the student interns' understanding of Hong Kong's shipping and port facilities, as well as international maritime trade.

On 12th July, the MAIS Boar Tour cum Sharing Session 2024 was held on a local vintage vehicular ferry named "Man Lok". The event was officiated by Mr. LIU Chun San, JP, the Under Secretary for Transport and Logistics, who delivered the welcome address. Mr. LIU shared with the participants the overview and opportunities of Hong Kong's maritime industry, stating that the Government continued support in the development of the local maritime industry and encouraged participants to consider pursuing their career in the maritime industry. The cruise toured around various port facilities at the harbour. Apart from a brief introduction of the facilities given by the host, professionals from different sectors of the maritime industry, such as maritime law, marine insurance and local vessels trade, were invited to introduce the career paths and share the latest developments and industry trends in their respective sectors.

The student interns also visited the Government Dockyard on 19th July. During this site visit, the student interns learned about the organisational structure of the Marine Department, the actual work of the personnel in the Dockyard, as well as the training and development for seafarers. The student interns also had the chance to enter the simulation room to simulate operating large container ship and speed boat in Hong Kong waters. Through the visit, the student interns were able to obtain some basic knowledge in response to different navigation situations as well as the basic skills in using nautical instruments and equipment.

To further broaden the horizons of the student interns, on 23rd July, they were arranged to visit Pacific Basin Shipping Limited, which is headquartered in Hong Kong. Representatives from different departments thoroughly explain the various business operations of a shipping company to the student interns which allowed the student interns to explore the latest developments in the maritime industry and to learn about different employment opportunities within the sector.

The internship program provides different avenues for students to get in touch with the industry, deepen their understanding of the vibrant development and career prospects of different maritime professions, and thus help them formulate their own career plans in advance and form a solid foundation for the student interns to plan and pursue their future career in the maritime industry.
