The first batch of students graduated following the launch of the Maritime Training Support Scheme under the Maritime and Aviation Training Fund10 May 2024

The first batch of the Secondary 6 students of Hong Kong Sea School (HKSS), who graduated after the launching of the Maritime Training Support Scheme under the Maritime and Aviation Training Fund (MATF), was on a passing-out parade on 10 May 2024. The Secretary for Transport and Logistics, Mr Lam Sai-hung, attended the parade as Reviewing Officer and delivered a speech.

In his speech, Mr Lam highlighted the support provided by the Maritime Training Support Scheme under MATF to the maritime manpower development. He delivered his congratulations and expressed his expectations to all the graduates. Noting that most of the graduates had already passed the Local Coxswain Grade 3 Certificate Examination and are ready to serve as coxswain in relevant local vessels, he hoped that they could join the local vessel companies and become leaders of the trade in the future. He also expressed his gratitude to the industry for their strong support in the development of maritime talent in Hong Kong.

The former Transport and Housing Bureau (now as “the Transport and Logistics Bureau”) launched the Maritime Training Support Scheme under MATF in the 2021/22 academic year, subsidising the Hong Kong Sea School to deliver a school-based Maritime Studies curriculum , covering basic knowledge and skills, chartering of local passenger launches for practical shipboard training, upgrading of pedagogies, and organisation of events for the promotion of maritime careers for a period of six years. A full-year subsidy may reach HK$3 million. The Scheme aims to enable the students to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and actual shipboard experience, thus preparing them to obtain the initial qualification in Local Coxswain Certificate of Competency and become local coxswains with a view to providing a steady and sustainable supply of competent new blood to the local vessel trade.
