2024 Yu Kun Practical Seafaring Training Programme Successfully Concluded11 August 2024 – 21 August 2024

Co-organised by the Hong Kong Seamen's Union (HKSU) and the Dalian Maritime University (DMU), and funded by the Maritime and Aviation Training Fund (MATF), the 11-day “Yu Kun” Practical Seafaring Training Programme covering the period from 11 August to 21 August 2024 was completed successfully. A total of 32 students from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the University of Hong Kong, the Maritime Training Institute, and the Hong Kong Sea School (HKSS) participated in the programme. Notably, this was the first time students from the HKSS participated in this event.

In addition to the classroom training of nautical-related knowledge and practicing navigational watch at ship operation in accordance with the international convention on watchkeeping for seafarers, this was the first time that the students had participated in a fire rescue and emergency ship abandon drill which enabled them to learn how to stay calm and perform self-rescue and mutual assistance effectively during emergency situation. The drill also enhanced the student’s understanding of onboard safety, and provided practical skills for seafaring which are imperative for them in pursuing their professional development in the maritime industry.

Besides, students also had the opportunity to engage in cross-disciplinary exchanges. Students specialising in engineering visited the bridge to learn about navigation operations, while those specialised on deck operation explored the engine room to understand engine operations. This interaction not only broadened their professional horizons but also strengthened mutual friendships.

At the graduation ceremony, participating students were awarded with certificates of completion, and they also shared their feeling as well as their gains and achievements. Students said that they had gained a wealth of practical seafaring knowledge through hands-on practice. They also emphasised that their interactions with students from DMU helped them better understand the actual working conditions of the maritime industry.
